My story.

Hey its Dave from CG Shortcuts welcome to our Website. Here’s a little bit of an origin story and why we do what we do!

Like most people I had no idea where to start when it came to learning 3D.

I jumped from software to software in the beginning starting with Maya, then moving to 3D Max, then to Blender, then Lightwave, then back to Maya again before finally settling on Cinema 4D to which I’m still using all these years later.

I think Cinema 4D stuck because I originally came from a Graphic and Web Design background and I personally found it much more intuitive and user friendly, and way faster to learn. I think I actually learnt more in Cinema 4D in one week than I did in years of using all the other packages.

I was also using After Effects a lot at the time which has always worked seamlessly with Cinema 4D. Which I guess is why it’s now the weapon of choice for most artists and studios out there.

I think working in motion graphics is the best job in the world, and definitely something that is becoming more and more in demand. 3D art seems to be everywhere at the moment!

Working with Cinema 4D has also taken me around the world, I’ve been lucky enough to work for clients in the US, UK, Germany, France and Singapore while living abroad in London. I’ve also had the privilege to work with huge brands like Disney, Warner Brothers, Channel 4 and American Express among others.

Aside from working in various studios I was also eventually able to go freelance which is the ULTIMATE FREEDOM, being able to pick and choose the projects I work on and the location in which I work is the best thing ever.

And while I learnt loads from the other artists that I’ve worked with over the years, I’m mainly self taught and learnt most of my craft from tutorials and training online, which I guess is what most people do these days.

So I started CG Shortcuts back in 2017 because I wanted to share all the tips and tricks I’ve picked up on my own journey in a uniquely different way.

If you’re anything like me you probably hate long boring tutorials, the kind that take forever to get to the point, or finish without even answering your question.

I set out to create the kind of training I always wanted when I started out.

Quick and to the point so people could learn what they need to and get on with the creative stuff.

And rather than covering every button and every setting of the software, we concentrate on teaching the most important topics and techniques, the kind of stuff every motion graphics artist should know, and the kind of stuff you can apply to your own projects straight away to improve your work in the fastest way possible.

Hence the name CG Shortcuts.

So if you want to take your skills to the next level and get paid for your work sooner, take a shortcut to better 3D.
